Arsenal stun Chelsea courtesy of brace from Black Stars hopeful Eddie Nketiah

Arsenal youngster Eddie Nketiah took advantage of a rare start to grab a brace in a six goal thriller at Stamford Bridge

Arsenal ended a shambolic run of form with a surprise win over Chelsea on Wednesday night. Mikel Arteta's men came into the game having dropped points against formidable opponents like Southampton and Brighton, so few people gave them a chance heading into the game.

Chelsea saw the first half-chance when Mason mount audaciously tried to go for goal directly from a corner kick, but a last-minute intervention spared Arsenal's blushes.

Thomas Tuchel opted to rest Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger, but the decision proved costly as Arsenal took the lead through a poor error. Andreas Christensen played a poor backpass towards Eduard Mendy, and Eddie Nketiah robbed him and did well to stay composed and roll the ball into the back of the net.

As is often the case, Arsenal tends to be their stumbling block. Barely five minutes after going ahead, Chelsea levelled the score. Timo Werner tried his luck from the edge of the box, and his weak deflected shot found its way past a flailing Aaron Ramsdale.

Although the first goal had a hint of luck, there was no such thing about the second. Martin Odegaard weaved his way into a good position before playing Emile Smith Rowe in, and the youngster picked his spot and buried the ball home from the edge of the box.

Just as with the first goal, Mikel Arteta would have asked questions of his defence as Chelsea was level five minutes later. Mason Mount whipped in a great cross, and Ceaser Azpilicueta found space to finish from close range.

At halftime, Thomas Tuchel replaced Christensen with Thiago Silva with hopes that the veteran would stabilise the Chelsea defence. The German manager would have been frustrated as Arsenal took the lead 12 minutes into the second half.

With newfound confidence from his first goal, Nketiah reacted quickest to a rebound from an Arsenal corner to fire the ball into the bottom corner of the Chelsea goal.

The home side nearly levelled the score a few minutes later when Marcos Alonso controlled a great diagonal ball, but his eventual shot was blocked by Gabriel.

Having played his part, Nketiah was denied a chance to leave with the matchball when Mikel Arteta substituted the youngetser for Gabriel martinelli in the 72nd minute.

The Gunners secured their three points in the final seconds of the game when Azpilicueta wrestled Bukayo Saka to the ground and gave away a penalty. Saka stepped up and sent Edouard mendy the wrong way.

That win revives Arsenal's Champions league hopes as they sit in fourth, level on points with North London rivals Tottenham. The Gunners hist Manchester United on April 23 in a match that can decide the European places at the end of the season.

NSCDC apprehends 69 suspected oil thieves in A’Ibom

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it apprehended 69 suspected oil thieves in Akwa Ibom between January and March.

NSCDC (DailyPost) The NSCDC Commandant in Akwa Ibom, Mr Abidemi Majekodunmi, said this in an interactive session with newsmen in Uyo on Thursday.

Majekodunmi said the corps had the mandate to protect government critical infrastructure and ensure that economic saboteurs were brought to justice.

He said that the suspects had been charged to court for prosecution and those found guilty would face the full wrath of the law.

According to him, in the first quarter of the year, the agency placed significant emphasis on the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure.

“Here in Akwa Ibom, we do know that the network of pipelines are much and definitely, we have criminals and non-state actors tampering with the pipelines for economic profiteering and sabotage.

“What we have done is to ensure that we deploy intelligence, capitals and assets to ensure that we do activities that serve as deterrent to these non-state actors that are always eager to steal petroleum products.

“When we get quality intelligence, we plan and execute operations to arrest. Currently, we have about seven boats. In that particular case, we have 69 suspects and illegal dealers in petroleum products.

“They have been charged to court and of course, we have done investigations and profiling of the cases for the court to do the appropriate adjudication,” he said.

The NSCDC state commandant said that the command was proactive in intelligence gathering across the 31 Local Government Areas of the state, to check criminality.

Majekodunmi said that NSCDC over the years had deployed technology to reach all criminal hideouts as part of its crime fighting efforts in the state.

He called on communities to protect government infrastructure in their domain against vandalism and to see the facilities as their own.

The commandant said that the corps would continue to promote crisis management and be proactive in dealing with conflicts in the state through peace and conflict resolution.

He warned oil thieves, pipeline vandals and other criminals to relocate from the state as the command would deal decisively with all economic saboteurs.

He called on the media to ensure objectivity in their reportage to guarantee peace and security across the country.

Nigerian Envoy woos foreign investors at World Bee Conference

The Consul General of Nigeria in New York, Amb. Lot Egopija, has urged foreign investors to utilise the investment opportunities in Nigeria by investing in bee farming.

Ambassador Peter Lot Egopija (GlobalPatriot)

Egopija made the call at the closing of 2022 World Bee Conference, organised by the Nigeria-USA Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Collaborative Chambers Alliance in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.

The envoy said the country’s potential in bee farming had been estimated at over 10 billion dollars annually as against the current inflow of 4.5 million dollars.

“Nigeria has the potential of becoming the largest producer of honey and manufacturer of honey products in Africa given it huge land size and lush vegetation,’’ he told the conference in a video message.

According to him, the Government of Nigeria is currently working on a medium to long-term development agenda to transit from oil-based economy to a green economy.

He said the Government was working to transit to a green economy which food security and environmental conservation, especially through agriculture, as areas of focus.

“It is estimated that about 10 million Nigerian households consume an average of one litre of honey annually at the cost of 30 million dollars, half of which is imported.

“With the appropriate facilities and funds, large quantities of different grades of honey can be sourced locally and packaged for exports to reduce pressure on our foreign exchange for honey importation.

“As the largest economy in Africa and one of the most profitable investment destinations in the world for potential investors, business opportunities are abundant and are on the increase in Nigeria,’’ the envoy said.

According to him, Nigeria enjoys duty-free trade with ECOWAS Member countries and as the largest consumer market in West Africa.

He said the Trade and Investment Desk of the Consulate-General was readily available to guide potential investors to fully maximise the benefits of the Federal Government’s visa on arrival policy, the pioneer status incentive, and the expanded tax holiday incentives, among others.

Egopija, therefore, pledged support for foreign investors willing to utilise the investment opportunities in Nigeria by investing in bee farming.

He said the Consulate-General was committed and determined to build lasting partnerships that would stimulate, sustain and deepen USA-Nigerian economic relations.

The theme of the conference is “The Economic Impacts of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators.’’

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference was held in preparation for the World Bee Day Celebration coming up in Spencer Ohio on Saturday May 21.

The World Bee Day is celebrated on May 20 to draw the attention of the world’s public and political decision-makers to the importance of protecting bees and other pollinators.

The goal is to strengthen measures aimed at protecting bees and other pollinators which are expected to contribute significantly to solving problems related to the global food supply and eliminate hunger in developing countries.

According to the United Nations (UN), bees and other pollinators, such as butterflies, bats, and hummingbirds are increasingly under threat from human activities.

Pollination is, however, a fundamental process for the survival of the world’s ecosystems.

Nearly 90 per cent of the world’s wild flowering plant species depend, entirely, or at least in part, on animal pollination, along with more than 75 per cent of the world’s food crops and 35 per cent of global agricultural land.
