It is sickening to canvass for Buhari’s second term – Wole Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has said that it is sickening for anybody to be canvassing for second term for President Muhammadu Buhari and that Nigeria needs reconfiguration.
Soyinka, speaking on Monday with journalists at the Freedom Park in Lagos, according to Vanguard, said those who said what Nigeria needed was just a restructuring of the mind were not saying the obvious.
Soyinka said restructuring of the mind was what could be done on daily basis, but that what the nation needed right now was real restructuring which he called ‘reconfiguring.’
The Nobel laureate also said it was sickening for some people to be canvassing second term in office for President Muhammadu Buhari midway into his first tenure, saying he did not want to be part of such discuss.

Timaya discloses he was once a Gigolo

Nigerian Musician, Timaya has narrated his ordeal in his quest for fame and fortune.

The award winning artiste disclosed that his benefactor (cougar) demanded his service when she pleased, stating that she used him as “a sex toy”.
Timaya said, “I was born into a fairly comfortable family but I was a rebel and I often ran away from home. He said, “I have always dreamed big. Despite my travails, I never let go of my aspirations while believing that one day, I would make it big.”

I’ll fight corruption better than Buhari if i become the president – Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has vowed to fight corruption in a way never done before if given the opportunity to become the president of the country.
Atiku said this during a facility tour of the new ultra-modern Yaliam Press Limited in Jabi area of Abuja on Monday.
Atiku, according to Punch, also challenged those he described as his self-righteous political enemies to either prove his alleged corrupt activities or keep quiet.
Atiku said “he would fight corruption like never before if he is given the opportunity to preside over the affairs of the country.”
The APC chieftain said, “It is sickening to continue to regurgitate allegations of corruption against me by people who have failed to come forward with a single shred of evidence of my misconduct while in office.”
He noted that people who lacked initiative, personal resourcefulness and ideas about wealth creation, “always assume that a man cannot build himself without stealing.”
“People who are bereft of ideas about entrepreneurial spirit always think that everyone else is a thief just like them,” he added.
Atiku said it was morally offensive for people who despise honest labour to become judges in the courts of public opinion, explaining that though he had not been convicted of corruption by any court in the land or elsewhere, his political enemies had been parading a fake morality to fool gullible Nigerians.

“Despite previous desperate efforts to link me with corruption, the William Jefferson trial in the United States ended in 2009 without indicting me or linking me to corrupt activities” he said.
Atiku recalled that he had pasted a reminder on his bed side during his training as a Customs officer that he would retire from any agency if he had not attained the headship of the place at the age of 40.
He said that he was only able to attain the position of a deputy director before his exit in 1989 to chart a career in business.
Atiku told the management and members of staff of Yaliam Press that he retired from the Nigeria Customs Service with unblemished records.
He challenged anybody who had evidence that he stole a kobo at the Customs or during his tenure as vice-president to confront him with evidence or file a petition against him.

Atiku said he did not become a Vice-President in 1999 as a pauper because he had been a successful investor throughout his retirement life.
He said, “If Atiku is a thief merely because of his resourcefulness and successful investments, my political enemies should tell Nigerians the sources of their own stupendous wealth.”
Atiku urged the management and members of staff of the company to manifest the values of honesty, hard work and diligence. These attributes, he said, stood him in good stead during his years as a public servant and an entrepreneur.
He said he was well equipped to fight corruption because of his vast experiences both in the public and private sectors and his ability to build a team capable of accomplishing the task.
“I will shock everyone because I believe that I will fight corruption like never before” he stressed.

.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, claims ex-President Goodluck Jonathan did not believe the Boko Haram insurgency was a serious issue.
The former president made the revelation in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in Lagos on Monday.
He said he brought the sect’s case before Jonathan but he rather believed the insurgency was a ploy by the north to stop him from getting re-elected.
“I went out in 2011 to Maiduguri. I took great risk to find out what is really happening about Boko Haram, do they have grievances, if they have grievances, what are their grievances and I brought all that to Jonathan,” Obasanjo said.
“Jonathan didn’t believe that Boko Haram was a serious issue. He thought that it was a device by the north to prevent him from continuing as president of Nigeria which was rather unfortunate.”
The former president also expressed his belief that the Boko Haram agitations are connected with frustration of youths in the north-east.
“Boko Haram will not be over; it started from a position of gross under-development, unemployment, youth frustration in the north-east. So we must be treating the disease not the symptom,” he said.

See why President Buhari almost ran away from the country

President Muhammadu Buhari has with a sense of humour, revealed he considered going on exile due to the harsh weather condition in the country, but for the improved rainy seasons in the last two years.
He said this while receiving the National Council of Traditional Rulers led by the sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III at the presidential villa on Monday.
“We are lucky that last year and this year the rainy season is good. If it were not good I must confide to you that I was considering which country to run to,” he said.
“But God answered the prayers of many Nigerians the rainy season last year was good and this year with the report I’m getting is good. We thank God for that otherwise there would have been a lot of problems in this country.”
This, he said, has led to good harvest and prevent famine in the country.
The President also decried the mismanagement and wastage of the nation’s resources over the years, stressing that it accounted for the economic woes Nigeria is experiencing at the moment.

He made the disclosure when he met with members of the National Council of traditional rulers at the new banquet hall, Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Recall the Federal government had released the second tranche of Paris Club refund to States totalling N243. 795 billion, and urged them to use a major part of it to offset salaries, pensions and other allowances been owed workers in their respective states.
“We have to digress this much because I would like to convince you that I’m living with the problems of this country day-by-day, and mostly those of the ordinary people.
“There are Nigerians that haven’t been paid for six months; there are Nigerians that have not been paid their retirement benefits for years.
“I’m appealing to the governors, (that was why we voted money, we borrowed money), please make sure anybody under you, pay them because most of them depend on that salary to pay rent, school fees,’’ he said.

Air Force strikes Insurgents’ Buildings in Borno

The Nigerian Air Force, NAF, says it has struck insurgents’ buildings in Borno.
Air Commodore, Olatokunbo Adesanya, the Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters, made this disclosure in a statement on Monday in Abuja.
Olatokunbo noted that it was in furtherance of the recently commenced Operation “Ruwan Wuta”.
Operation “Ruwan Wuta” was launched reccently by the NAF to degrade the capability of the insurgents further.
“On Sept. 7, NAF conducted air interdiction on structures with two hoisted insurgents’ organisation flags in Zanari, a known location with significant insurgents’ presence at the northern fringes of Borno bordering Lake Chad.
“Quite a number of the insurgents had earlier been spotted, from a NAF Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Platform, entering the buildings apparently for meetings.
“The F-7Ni and the Alpha Jet aircraft were detailed to attack the target. Overhead the location, the target was acquired and engaged by the two aircraft in rapid succession. Subsequent Battle Damage Assessment revealed that the targeted structures went up in flames, killing its occupants.”
The director explained that the objective of “Operation Ruwan Wuta” was to further degrade the capability of the insurgents thereby, preventing them from regrouping to wreck havoc for our surface forces.
He explained that the operation was also aimed at softening the ground for the surface forces to subsequently move in and conduct mopping up operations.

Nigeria is stagnant, underdeveloped under Buhari administration – Wike

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, said President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has made the country stagnant and without any development.
The governor, according to Punch, spoke during the special thanksgiving service for the PDP candidates of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District on Sunday at the All Saints Anglican Cathedral, Bori, Khana Local Government Area.
Wike also called on the federal government to address the “massive” electoral irregularities imposed by the administration on Nigerians, rather than focus on fighting hate speeches with fluid definition.
Wike said though he had respect for the person of President Muhammadu Buhari, the truth remained that the current administration had failed Nigerians through lack of meaningful projects delivery.
He described the Federal Government’s fight against corruption as a survival trick by a non-performing government, adding that he would continue to say the truth even if the Federal Government viewed it as hate speech.
“I have respect for the President. He is the President of all Nigerians and not of a political party. But the country is stagnant. There is no development going on. All you are hearing about the fight against corruption is a mere survival trick by a non-performing government. The only story they have is Diezani. Even that story will soon end.
“Hate speech is used to suppress the ability of the people to resist the evils being perpetrated by the APC Federal Government,” the governor said.
The governor also vowed that the people of the state would resist any attempt to rig the 2019 general elections.
“Whether it is Army or Police, what happened during the rerun will not happen in 2019. We cannot fold our hands. God has given us the opportunity to defend ourselves,” he added.

Nnamdi Kanu reacts to soldiers’ invasion of his home

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has accused the Nigerian Army of attempting to kill him over his determination to actualise Biafra.
He spoke after the after math of soldiers invading his home at Afara Ukwu, Umuahia, yesterday, an incident which left not less than seven people killed and several others injured.
Kanu said they shot sporadically, adding that their sole aim was to take his life.
Narrating the incident to Daily Sun, Kanu recalled he was resting when one of his relatives drew his attention to heavy presence of soldiers at the main entrance to his family home.
He said within few minutes, “the soldiers started shooting sporadically and, in the process, wounded many people within the vicinity.
“Their action was a crude show of power on innocent and defenceless people of Biafra”.
Kanu, however, called on his members “to remain calm”.
Also reacting, Kanu’s younger brother Emmanuel, in his response, said any attempt to kill his elder brother will spell doom for the country.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has denied claims they attacked the Ipob leader’s residence, claiming rather that their convoy was attacked by the Biafra agitators.

My unforgettable car accident – Uche Elendu, actress

One can never get enough of Uche Elendu. The role interpreter has always fascinated her fans. Though, marriage seemed to have slowed her down, the mother of two is now back and ready to release her latest movie, The Altar. In this interview, Elendu opens up on her career, challenges and motherhood.
What production are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on the promotion of my soon-to-be-released blockbuster movie, The Altar.
How did you get into acting?
Venturing into the movie industry wasn’t by chance. I had a passion and a strong desire to use my talent to create a lasting impact in the life of the people. So, it was easy to delve into the industry, because aside the fact that I could identify with the gift I possess, it is also a career that has great influence on people. And I intend to influence the lives of people positively.
What are your challenges?
I won’t really say it’s a challenge. But having to balance the home as a mom and also create time for movies is a big challenge in itself. But I thank God that He has been sufficient enough.
What are your experiences?
Out of the several experiences, one I’ll like to point out was the day I had a ghastly accident while driving to location. It was an experience that would live with me forever. Despite all the odds, God came to my rescue and kept me alive. This, indeed, is my biggest experience concerning the movie industry.
What are your aspirations as far as this career is concerned?
I’ll like to reach the highest of heights. I’ll love to break into Hollywood and make movies that would keep the world at attention.
Did you do any extra thing to get to where you are now?
It’s work, work and more work to develop my ability. I also had to be closer to God to draw strength from Him.
Did you ever fail at any time?
There’s no perfect man. But one thing is certain; whenever I fall I always pick myself up and then try again and again till I get it right.
Were you ever afraid of failure?
There was the initial scare due to the highly competitive nature of the movie industry. But I believed in my ability and in God, and this gave me strength to pull through.

To win by (il)legal means

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta speaks to his supporters in Nairobi. PHOTO: ap photo / ben curtis

Mr President, I can imagine your disappointment last week after the ruling by the Supreme Court declaring your election null and void. Four out of six justices nullified an election in which 10.6 million people, or 54% of the population, voted for you. But all hope is not lost. I was moved to write after watching your first press conference, in which you lamented the “unfair” outcome of the ruling, but indicated that you were constrained to abide by the decision of the court. I wondered about the discussions you must have had with your family and close aides, especially the justice minister, before you faced the press that day. When Kenyatta was Kenyatta, it was inconceivable that any man born of a woman would nullify an election in which 10.6 million Kenyans had elected him. You will recall, Mr President, that, until he died of a heart attack 39 years ago, your father, Jomo Kenyatta, was the sun in the Harambee firmament. The grand old man ruled Kenya for 15 years with an iron fist and only permitted opposition to exist, very briefly, as decoration. It is not the fault of the court, you see. Your main rival and fifth-time contender for the presidency, Raila Odinga, knows that Kenyatta senior would not have accepted from his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, what you have had to endure at his hands. Who knows, you may have even been in the same party with Odinga today had certain events not taken place in the mid-1960s that eventually led to the expulsion of Odinga senior from your father’s party. In hindsight, you probably thought that your father’s decision to expel Odinga – then his deputy – from the party in 1969 was harsh. Perhaps now you will begin to understand why your father, a revolutionary, did what he did. It was not just about the overstated differences between the Luo and the Kikuyu, or any economic or ideological differences. The Odinga clan cannot bear being governed. It has been said that you are bitter about the court ruling. You have also been quoted as describing the chief justice and other justices of the Supreme Court as “wakora” (crooks and scoundrels), vowing that you will “fix” the court once the election is over. That statement has led to unflattering interpretations, including a rebuke from the Law Society of Kenya. It did not help that, soon after your statement, the dormitory where the daughter of Chief Justice David Maraga was staying at Moi Girls High School burnt down. She escaped by sheer instinct, having inexplicably decided to stay elsewhere that day. Mr President, I imagine that, following the court ruling, the true Kenyatta blood in you might be stirred up. But hold your peace. You do not have to force your opponents to walk the plank. In spite of the setback, you will win again on October 17. How? That is what this private letter is about. Your party, Jubilee, has provided free maternal care; cleaned up the slums; digitised public records, and opened them up to public access and scrutiny; added more than 325 megawatts of power to the national grid in two years; and constructed a standard gauge railway from Mombasa to Nairobi. Of course, the opposition National Super Alliance has been snapping at your heels for allegedly overborrowing and failing to transparently account for a 280 billion-Kenyan shilling (R35 billion) Eurobond loan – raising the spectre that this could be another Anglo-Leasing scandal, one of the worst in Kenya’s history. Surely you can understand the mentality of the opposition, Mr President. These people are poor upstairs. They are posing as friends of the poor for votes, while trying to frame you as the out-of-touch heir of a rich father, whose mother, Ngina, was also one of Kenya’s richest women. It is pure jealousy, Mr President. As for the election on October 17, I repeat that there is no reason you should not win again. And the good news is that you can even win without contesting the election. Do not be surprised, Mr President. If you lost by contesting, why do you suppose you cannot win without contesting? I am not speaking of a political contest, but a legal contest – taking the fight to the opponent on the same turf where you lost: the court. I am aware of the limitations of Kenya’s Constitution – that election petitions have to be dispensed with within 14 days at the Supreme Court, and that pre-election matters are decided in Kenya before elections. I am also aware that you have agreed to abide by the court’s decision. Yet, in what might be your last chance to clinch victory, you must act before the court publishes its full judgment; you must aim to sterilise the judgment and arrest it before it becomes public. If you can do that, Justice Maraga and his brother justices will have no choice but to review the judgment, eat humble pie and award your hard-earned victory. All you need, Mr President, are the services of a few bright senior advocates of Nigeria. As we have the same common-law heritage, it should not be difficult for them to adapt. Our politicians line them up all the time for all sorts of cases. And if you excuse my quoting US President Donald Trump here, they know how to win. If I may hint at it, Mr President, for a matter as important as yours, our senior advocates will bring a forensic focus to bear on the Kenyan Constitution that will reveal the hidden technicalities. Their lordships will be surprised to find there is quite a handful, enough at least, to deliver a pre-emptive victory before October 17. By the time our senior advocates have finished with the legal technicalities and prayers for adjournment upon adjournment, Mr President would have nearly completed his four-year second term; and who knows where the 72-year-old Odinga will be by then? Mr President does not have to worry about what Kenyans may say about the novelty of seeking legal help abroad. Even if some Kenyans are unhappy about it, foreign observers who would be pleased with this saving grace know that, in a globalised world, help is where you find it. What is new? Is the jury not out on whether the Russians helped Trump win? I must resist the temptation to say more, publicly. Mr President should rest assured that, as he weighs up this exceptional approach, his father’s benign spirit is smiling over him, urging him not to throw away the ancient victory over the archrivals.
